Background of the Study
Social media platforms such as Instagram and TikTok have emerged as influential arenas where Nigerian youth and other users display innovative phonetic styles. These platforms encourage users to experiment with pronunciation, intonation, and speech patterns to create distinctive digital identities (Olawale, 2023). The study examines how social media trends on Instagram and TikTok affect Nigerian phonetics, comparing speech patterns and vocal modifications across these platforms. Users often adopt creative enunciation techniques, influenced by visual performance and the need for brevity in digital content. This phenomenon leads to the emergence of new phonetic norms that differ from traditional speech patterns. By analyzing user-generated videos and audio clips, this research aims to identify key phonetic features shaped by digital trends, such as altered stress patterns, pitch variations, and rapid speech delivery. Understanding these changes is essential for appreciating how digital media drive language evolution and influence broader communication practices in Nigeria (Adebayo, 2024; Eze, 2025). The study also explores the cultural implications of these phonetic shifts and their potential impact on language education.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the rapid rise of social media, there is limited research on how platforms like Instagram and TikTok influence Nigerian phonetics. Variations in speech delivery on these platforms may result in non-standard pronunciation and altered phonetic features (Olawale, 2023). The lack of comparative studies between different social media outlets hampers our understanding of how digital trends shape language. This research addresses the gap by examining and comparing phonetic adaptations on Instagram and TikTok, thereby revealing the influence of digital communication on traditional phonetic norms (Adebayo, 2024; Eze, 2025).
Objectives of the Study
To compare phonetic features in Instagram and TikTok speech.
To identify key phonetic adaptations influenced by digital trends.
To assess the cultural impact of these phonetic changes.
Research Questions
What phonetic features are modified in digital speech on Instagram and TikTok?
How do these adaptations differ between the two platforms?
What are the implications for traditional Nigerian phonetics?
Significance of the Study
This study elucidates how social media trends influence Nigerian phonetics, offering insights into the evolution of digital speech. The findings will benefit linguists, educators, and digital content creators by informing strategies for language preservation and innovation in the digital era (Olawale, 2023; Adebayo, 2024; Eze, 2025).
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is confined to the analysis of phonetic changes on Instagram and TikTok and does not extend to other social media platforms or offline speech.
